Description

This is the representation of the spatial distribution of sampling transects with experimental trawl GOC-73 carried out during the MEDITS 2022 GSA05 campaign in Mallorca and Menorca (Demarcación Marina Levantino-Balear (DM LEBA)) on board the B/O Miguel Oliver. The transects correspond to the 61 sampling transects of MEDITS GSA05 in sedimentary bottoms of the continental shelf and slope (trawl fleet fishing grounds) between 55 and 750 m deep . The sampling strategy is of the stratified random type with geographical sectors identified based on the geographical sub-areas of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean and in the Balearic Islands four depth strata: 51-100, 101-200, 20-500 and 501-800 m. The sampler used is the bottom trawl GOC-73, designed specifically for this sampling programme (Fiorentini et al., 1999; Dremiere et al., 1999). It is an experimental gear of reduced dimensions (16-18 m of horizontal opening and 2.7-3.2 m of vertical opening) and with a cod-end of rhombic mesh of 20 mm. The effective duration of sampling, since the gear reaches the bottom, is 30 and 60’ for samples at <200 and >200 m depth, respectively, and the trawl speed of 2.7-3.0 knots. It is a data set composed of linear elements, where each element represents the path of the sampling transect from the starting point (when the gear reaches the bottom) and to the turning point. Each object is associated with a series of alphanumeric variables such as background and turn coordinates, depth, date and time of sampling, duration, distance traveled and area swept, among other variables. Sampling station data (positions, depth and speed), as well as species list, size distribution and biological data of the species caught, are recorded on board and computerised into five types of files used to store and exchange MEDITS data: TA, TB , TC, TE and TL.
