Consumer prices; European harmonised price index 2015=100
Description
This table contains figures on the price evolution of a package of goods and services purchased by consumers in the Netherlands. These figures are compiled according to European guidelines and this is called the European harmonised consumer price index (HICP) for the Netherlands. The composition of the goods and services package allows for a comparison of price developments between EU countries.
The table also shows the HICP constant taxes: this is the HICP in which the effect of changes in the rates of taxes on products (e.g. VAT and excise duties on alcohol and tobacco) has been removed.
In addition, the table shows the monthly and annual changes in the HICP. The annual rate of change in total expenditure is an important indicator of inflation. These figures can be viewed across 325 spending categories. There are also 34 aggregations of product groups (special aggregates) in the table. For each product group, it is also possible to find out how much the consumer in the Netherlands spends on it in relation to his total expenditure. This is called the weighting coefficient. The total weighting is 100,000.
HICP figures are published every month. In addition, an annual figure will be published at the end of the year. The HICP of a calendar year is calculated as the average of the 12-month indices of that year.

Status of figures:
Rapid estimate figures are published immediately at the end of a reporting month or shortly thereafter. The rapid estimate provides figures for the main level of the HICP and for a number of special aggregates. These figures are calculated on the basis of incomplete source data. The results of the rapid estimate are characterised as provisional.
At the time of the second publication for the same reporting month, the figures are in most cases final. Differences between the rapid estimate and the final results are explained by the source data that became available after the rapid estimate. The results of the HICP are only characterised as provisional in the second publication if it is already known at the time of publication that data are still incomplete, a revision is expected in a later month, or in special circumstances such as the coronavirus crisis. In that case, the figures become final one month later.

Changes as of 8 February 2024:
From the reporting month of January 2024, a price development will be published for spending category 063000 Hospital services. This new index series is based on December 2023. This means that the index level of 100 corresponds to the price level as measured on December 2023. Previously, an index for the same spending category was also published between 2000 and 2009. That index series had as base year 2005=100, and stopped after December 2009. The current series will start again at 100 as of December 2023.
When will there be new figures?
The figures for the rapid estimate shall be published on the last working day of the month to which the figures refer, or shortly thereafter.
The final figures are usually published between the first and second Thursday of the month following the reporting month.
