Decentralised government; income, expenses and balance on a quarterly basis
Description
This table presents quarterly data on local government expenses, income and balances; municipalities, provinces, water boards and joint schemes. Where available, the data shall be obtained directly from the accounts of the authorities concerned. The methodology used is therefore fully in line with the national rules for local and regional authorities (Budget and Justify Decision – BCR). The data presented are not consistent with the national accounts publications.
CBS does not make any corrections to the figures provided. Statistics Netherlands does make estimates for the units that belong to the local government, but that do not provide data.
This table gives substance to EU Directive 2011/85. This directive is part of six European legislative measures known as the 'Sixpack'.
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) published the revised National Accounts in June 2018. Among other things, gross domestic product (GDP) and total government expenditure have been revised upwards as a result of the revision. As part of the overhaul, the determination of the population of common arrangements has improved qualitatively. The population has grown in size. As of the first quarter of 2018, income, expenses and the balance after revision are published in this table for local and regional government. The figures for the previous quarters have not been adjusted on the basis of the revision. Between the fourth quarter of 2017 and the first quarter of 2018, a break occurs as a result of the changed population of common schemes.

Status of figures:
All recent figures are provisional. When a new quarter is published, the provisional figures for the previous quarter can be adjusted. After publication of the annual figures in accordance with the administrations of the local and regional authorities, the quarterly figures become final. The annual figures are published one year after the end of the reporting year in December.
Changes as of 28 June 2024:
Preliminary figures for the first quarter of 2024 are included.
When will there be new figures?
The new quarterly figures will be published three months after the end of the quarter. When a new quarter is published, the provisional figures for the previous quarter can be adjusted.
