Thousands of years ago, people began to change the landscape: They cleared land, dammed streams, drained bogs, planted trees, built dikes, fertilized meadows, or built settlements, roads, and railroads. Due to the respective type of use, the landscape character also changed over the course of history.
The landscapes shaped, designed or influenced by people are called cultural landscapes.
The metropolitan region of Hamburg is characterized by different cultural landscapes. The most famous examples of this are probably the Lüneburg Heath and the Old Land.
