Representation service of the wasteful landscapes of Germany. ‘Important landscapes in Germany’ is a stringent nationwide technical concept for the protected property or the subject of action landscape in accordance with the objectives of the Federal Nature Conservation Act as well as neighbouring areas such as spatial planning and monument protection. In essence, it is about landscapes with significance for natural and cultural heritage and landscapes with current or potential significance for landscape experience and landscape-related recreation, as far as this can be represented in a nationwide concept. The individual significant landscapes were identified with reference to numerous relevant sources and expert reports, if such were available, discussed at expert meetings, subsequently clarified and published as BfN scripts 516 and 517 (Schwarzer et al. 2018a, b). In view of the high technical relevance of the concept, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation followed the published first version with a consultation phase in which the significant landscapes were discussed at further workshops with experts. In addition to the information provided in the course of the consultation, the background to the consolidated version now available is also based on new data bases that have been published in the meantime. The consolidated version also includes further relevant approaches to the topic of landscape and deals with various fields of application of the significant landscapes (Schwarzer et al. 2022).
