Electronic Navigational Charts
Description
Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) are defined as a database that is standardised in terms of content, structure and format for use in the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). The ENC shall contain all the chart information necessary for safe navigation and may also contain additional information (in addition to that contained in the paper chart, e.g. sailing instructions) which may be considered necessary for safe navigation.
The navigator needs to view everything from detailed maps for use in docks to simplified maps for use in open sea navigation or navigation planning. ENC cells are produced in 6 levels of detail: Overview, General, Coastal, Approach, Harbour and Berthing
