Description
The map distribution of mineral resources in the German North Sea – gravel deposits provides information on the distribution of sediments classified according to their gravel content. The background for the determination of the gravel content is the continuously high demand of this mineral raw material, e.g. for the construction industry. This map covers the area of the entire German North Sea on a scale of 1: 250,000 with a statement on the sediments of the upper 0.2 m from the seabed surface. Three additional maps show evaluations of drill data in the depth intervals 0-1 m, 1-2 m and 2-3 m. The legend includes five classes in gradations of 20 wt .-% gravel content. The map is based on sediment samples from the seabed surface to a depth of 0.2 m as well as strata descriptions of boreholes that were available in the German North Sea region until November 2012. The basic data are stored in databases at the BSH and LBEG, and data collected in the future will be integrated into them.
The loose sediments are classified according to their grain sizes according to DIN EN 14688-1: clay (grain size <0.002 mm); silt (grain size 0.002 to 0.063 mm); sand (grain size 0.063 to 2.0 mm); gravel (grain size 2.0 to 63 mm); Stones and blocks (>63 mm). On the basis of the particle size analyses carried out in the laboratory and the layer descriptions from boreholes, the sediments are classified for corresponding questions.
