Description
In 2013, some 79.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. As a result, emissions were around 1.2% higher than in 1990. Compared to the previous year, emissions decreased by 0.2% in 2013. The main reason for this was the reduction in emissions in the field of energy generation. The economic sectors not subject to the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) emitted 49.68 million tonnes in 2013. They thus fell below the national emission ceiling for 2013 allowed under the Effort-Sharing Decision by 2.9 million tonnes. According to scenario analyses by the Federal Environment Agency, the EU's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 can only be achieved through additional measures at home, especially in transport and room heating.
