Survey of the current state of Pirkanmaa’s valuable rock sites 2015

Description

A study on the current state of valuable rock sites in Pirkanmaa was carried out in 2015 as part of the project to coordinate the protection of groundwater and the management of aggregates (POSKI). The data includes the demarcation of the valuable rock areas of Pirkanmaa that were examined in connection with the study. The aim of the study was to check whether the values of the invented rock areas of the Finnish Environment Institute in the 1990s have been preserved and how much permits have been granted for the extraction of rock aggregates in accordance with the Land Resources Act. The revision is mainly based on observations made on aerial photographs and maps. The report presents areas where land use changes have occurred. The Pirkanmaa Regional Council received funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the POSKI project by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Pirkanmaa. In addition, the Pirkanmaa Regional Council, the Geological Survey of Finland, the Municipality of Kangasala, the Municipality of Lempäälä, the City of Nokia, the Municipality of Pirkkala, the City of Tampere and the City of Ylöjärvi participated in the funding of the project. Nationally and provincially valuable (categories 1-4) are shown in Pirkanmaa’s regional plan 2040 as valuable geological formations. The rock areas of value classes 5 and 6 are locally valuable. The material supports decision-making when making decisions under the Land Materials Act and the Building Act. Valuable rock sites should be taken into account when planning land use in these areas. More detailed information on the valuable rock sites in Pirkanmaa can be found in the Finnish Environment Institute’s (SYKE) inventory reports. The Finnish Environment Institute carried out terrain work related to the inventory in the provinces of Turku, Pori and Häme in the early 1990s. The present Pirkanmaa is partly located in both counties, and there are a total of 154 nationally and 151 locally valuable rock areas in Pirkanmaa. The inventories relate to a national project launched by the Ministry of the Environment in 1987, which developed methods for inventing rock areas of high natural and landscape value. When granting permits for the extraction of rock aggregates in accordance with the Land Materials Act, the landscape and natural scientific values of rock areas must be known. The first three letters of the symbol indicate which type of protection programme the object belongs to (KAO = valuable rock areas), the next two digits correspond to the number of the old county (before 1 September 1997) and the remaining four digits are sequential numbers Ala_ha: hectares of area Shape= Material type
