Human biomonitoring Overview & outlook
Description
The Federal Environment Agency provides a comprehensive and compact overview of methods and developments in human biomonitoring, an instrument that measures the exposure of a person to environmental pollutants. For this purpose, concentrations of pollutants or their metabolites in the blood or urine are determined. Water-soluble substances such as organic solvents, a number of pesticides, e.g. organophosphates, pyrethroids and carbamates, and numerous metals are usually detected in the urine. Fat-soluble substances such as organochlorine pesticides and various industrial chemicals are determined in the blood. The importance of human biomonitoring in environmental and health policy in the future is illustrated by the activities of the European Union and the USA. Controversial opinions on human biomonitoring are also presented.
