Natura 2000/FFH sites/EU bird protection areas The Habitats Directive was adopted by the Council of the European Community in 1992. The abbreviation “FFH” stands for fauna = fauna, flora = plant life and habitat = habitat of certain plant and animal species. The aim of the Habitats Directive is to preserve biodiversity in Europe. This is to be done by setting up a Europe-wide networked protected area system called Natura 2000 in order to secure, preserve and develop natural and close-to-natural habitats as well as endangered wild fauna and plants.
