Description
The federal and state governments use subsidies as a steering instrument to promote certain activities, techniques or products. Such support, aid and grants may also encourage environmentally counterproductive developments and exacerbate the problem of external environmental costs. For the province of Upper Austria, the Federal Environment Agency has analysed a selection of such subsidies with regard to their impact on the environment. The analysis focuses on support in the areas of transport/mobility, construction/housing as well as tourism and agriculture. The results show that the consideration of environmental and sustainability aspects is important in subsidy policy. The report also proposes solutions for how subsidies in the selected areas can lead to a reduction of negative environmental effects.
