Surface Water Quality Indicators: Trophic grade of surface lyntic waters (2021)

Description

The trophic degree of lyntic waters (quiet or stagnant inland waters such as lakes, lagoons, ponds, wetlands and marshes) is assessed on the basis of chlorophyll A data included in the Monitoring Programmes (surveillance control and operational programme) intended to assess the status, in compliance with state and European regulations. The eutrophication of the waters results from the increase in the concentration of nutrients in them, and is manifested by the massive proliferation of planktonic algae, limiting as a consequence, the transparency of the waters and increasing the consumption of oxygen in the deep waters. The amount of chlorophyll A present in the waters is an indirect way to evaluate the trophic degree in which it is found, since it indicates the number of organisms present in the medium with this pigment. The trophic grade of the waters can be classified as eutrophic, non-eutrophic, and at risk of eutrophy. For this indicator, two classes are considered, following the OECD specifications. The criterion of the maximum chlorophyll A is applied, since the data reflected in the graph correspond to values taken in summer times, where the highest annual chlorophyll values are expected.
