Description
This map shows the nitrate concentrations in water that leaches from agricultural parcels in the Netherlands. Nitrate is a nutrient that consists of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen is applied to the soil in agriculture with animal manure and fertilizer to allow plants to grow better. Part of the nitrogen leaches out as nitrate and thus ends up in the ground and surface water. Nitrate is an important indicator of the quality of groundwater and surface water, especially as a source of drinking water. The nitrate map helps to make it clear in which areas the water quality may become a problem due to nitrate leaching. RIVM has created this map using a statistical model based on data from the National Measuring Network for the Effects of Manure Policy (LMM). This map helps to discuss where additional measures are needed in the Netherlands to further reduce leaching of nitrate from agricultural land. Based on the nitrate map, no statements can be made about the water quality at a detailed level. The values in this card can actually be 15 mg/L higher or lower on average.
