Microplastics in sewage sludge.

Description

Microplastics enter the wastewater through various sources and thus into the sewage sludge. This study provides a first insight into the emergence of microplastics in sewage sludge from Austrian wastewater treatment plants. For this purpose, samples from 35 municipal wastewater treatment plants were examined. The dominant plastic types were PU, PET and PP. A correlation between population values in the catchment area of the wastewater treatment plant and the number of microplastic particles could not be established. For plastic particles > 1 mm, a possible influence was determined by the sewer system (mixing or separation system) or by the degree of urbanization. Very high levels of microplastics are probably due to industrial dischargers. Overall, it can be assumed that a variety of factors are responsible for the amount and type of microplastic composition in sewage sludge.
