Issue No. 23 from the series “scriptum — Work Results from the Geological Service North Rhine-Westphalia” deals with the question of the potential and risks of the extraction of natural gas from unconventional deposits. It includes an evaluation of numerous reports on this topic, a critical consideration of the regional geological findings in North Rhine-Westphalia and the current international literature. The importance of unconventional natural gas reserves in NRW is discussed with a view to the issue of security of supply.
