Nomenclature of Helsinki

Description

The data includes Helsinki's official place names, i.e. names confirmed in city plans for streets, parks and other public areas. The names are in Finnish and Swedish. The names are accompanied by the reasons for the nomination and other possible additional information, such as the previous name and changes in spelling. In addition, the dataset contains the names of the areas according to the administrative division of the city (districts, subdivisions, basic districts). The data also includes the names of public places maintained by the City of Helsinki, such as sports parks and marinas, processed by the Nomenclature Committee, even if they have not been confirmed in the town plan. The Nomenclature is maintained as part of the Helsinki Municipal Register (Facta system). The nomenclature is planned and confirmed as part of the local detailed plan process. The Nomenclature Committee, which consists of experts in Helsinki's history, Finnish and Swedish languages, urban planning and urban culture, prepares the nominations. The material is updated in connection with the planning process and the work of the Nomenclature Committee. The material can be downloaded in several formats, including JSON, KML, CSV, Esri Shape and XML.
