Basic grid crown cover Flanders, 1m resolution, recording 2015

Description

At the request of INBO, the Environment Information Partnership (OIS) of the Environment Policy Domain in 2021 asked Digital Flanders, Earth Observation & Data Science programme (DV-EODaS), and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research, Remote Sensing department (VITO-RS) to investigate whether disappeared trees can be monitored with aerial images and LiDAR data and with satellite data (in this case Sentinel 1 & 2). In this case, tree monitoring is similar to tree canopy monitoring. The term ‘crown cover’ is considered in this project as 'the area covered by (tree) crowns and seen from above by remote sensing techniques'. The project has shown that a Basic Grid Crown Cover can be created on the basis of the Digital Height Model Flanders II LiDAR data (DHMVII) and the Green Maps. For the creation of the basic grid, the LiDAR data (and its derivatives) were used, which were then iteratively tested with the High Green class from the existing Green maps. This leads to a refinement compared to the Green Cards and thus an improvement in the determination of the crown cover, both in quality and consistency. The derivation of tree crowns and tree heights from LiDAR data is one of the most accurate remote sensing applications and yields potentially better results. The binary (0 or 1) basic grid crown cover 2015 Flanders has a resolution of 1m.
