Description
The distribution map of the Plant Atlas, or Finnish tubular plants, is based on the Kastikka database maintained by the Plant Museum of the Central Museum of Natural History. The creation of the vegetation database started already in the mid-1960s, and by May 2011 approximately 5.6 million plant observations had been recorded. They are derived from collection samples from Finnish plant museums, unpublished field notes, and botanical and other publications containing distribution information on the vascular plants in Finland. The first version of the Atlas was released on diskettes as a digital copy in 1993 and the second version in 1995.
The Central Museum of Natural Sciences has also published a data product compiled from the results of the 2021 Plant Atlas as a WFS and WMS interface service. In the INSPIRE data product, the observation data collected in the plant Atlas has been generalised into map layers representing the distribution of the plants. Species-specific distribution maps include the 10 km * 10 km squares of the uniform coordinate system where the plant in question has been found to be present. The distribution maps of plants are distributed as a single set of data. Separate plant-specific WMS map layers can be published upon request.
