Description
As part of the GIS support activities at the Wildbach- und Avalinenverbauung Sektion Tirol (Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management), a new approach with geographical location designations (e.g. district names) was developed, which makes it possible to automatically recognize and assign the projection of geodata. The effort for GIS users without knowledge of coordinate systems was enormous in the event of ambiguities before this solution. In the meantime, no additional support effort is required. The basic principle of the solution is that a geographical name is independent of coordinates or projection. If geometries of a place are combined with the geographical name in different projections, a clear assignment of the unclear spatial data set is almost always possible.
