Description
In the event of heavy rain, the water on the streets can become so high that certain road sections become impassable for passenger cars, or even for emergency traffic such as ambulances, police and fire brigade.
Safety related to emergency services: in a T10 shower (35mm/1h) there should not be more than 5 cm of water depth anywhere. This map layer shows which roads remain accessible in three categories. In total there are 1055 kilometers of road, of which 129 km becomes impassable in a T10 shower, and therefore does not meet the safety standard (orange-colored road sections are still included).
About this risk analysis:
In order to get a clear picture of where flooding will occur during extreme precipitation, the Province of Zuid-Holland consultancy Nelen & Schuurmans has had the provincial infrastructure of Zuid-Holland tested on a model basis (2023). This is also called a stress test. This stress test is based on a certain total precipitation - calculated for 35 millimetres and 70 millimetres, over the relevant area around the roads managed by the province, in a period of one hour.
The relevant area has been determined on the basis of the publicly available road file, included in the Large-Scale Topography Basic Registration (BGT). The roads are filtered by the road operator; the roads included in the analysis are in the management of the Province of Zuid-Holland.
