Near-term forecast of Austrian greenhouse gas emissions for 2021 (Nowcast 2022).
Description
The near-term forecast of greenhouse gas emissions was carried out using a simplified methodology and shows preliminary emissions for 2021 of around 77.1 million tonnes. Compared to 2020, this represents an increase of 4.8% or 3.5 million CO2 equivalent. Emissions reported by emissions trading facilities increased by 6.2% in 2021 to 28.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This is due in particular to increases in steel production and electricity generation in gas-fired power plants. In the non-ETS sectors, around 46.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in 2021. The increase in emissions of around 4.0% compared to 2020 is mainly due to the increased consumption of fuels (+4.1%), heating oil (+9.0) and natural gas (+4.8%).
