Distinctive and cool dikes of supraregional significance
Description
This map shows the 'Characteristic and cool dikes of supraregional significance' as mentioned in List 3a in the publication 'Ontgonnen Verleden' (Baas et al., Landview/LNV, 2001). The 76 dikes/dyke systems were mapped in 2023 on the basis of recent source data, namely: flood defences joint water boards, Top10NL (centre line section; relief embankment high side), RWS dike rings and the RCE dike lines map.
At the time, the following criteria were used in the selection for 'exploited past':
kenmerkend voor bepaalde fase in de Nederlandse bedijkingsgeschiedenis (zee- rivier- dwarsdijk)
2. Preferably an upper-local function
3. Some degree of coolness or recognisability. Dike can be strengthened. Coolness is seen here as the extent to which the original function of the dike has remained recognizable.
