National Geological Map at 1:50,000 scale

Description

The Geological Map of Spain, at a scale of 1:50,000 (MAGNA) made between 1972 and 2003, constitutes the fundamental basis for the development of products and activities related to geological, hydrogeological, mineral resources, natural risk, and in general with any action on the physical environment.
In 1993, an agreement was established between the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía and the Technological and Geomining Institute of Spain, for the digitization of the sheets corresponding to the territory of Andalusia of the National Geological Map at 1:50,000 scale.
The main objective of the agreement is to obtain the digital cartography of the geological, topographic and altimetric map contained in the corresponding sheet with an exact geometry to the edited map, and to obtain a digital sheet that includes all the elements of the edited sheet: geological map, geochronological and lithostratigraphic legend, legend of conventional signs, tectonic, geological or any kind of schemes, geological cuts, etc... The final result is a sheet of composition similar to the edited sheet and of cartography identical to the edited cartography.
The geological map is divided into sheets at a scale of 1:50,000, in which the geological information contained in this sheet is represented.
Geological information comprises the different chronolithstratigraphic units of the corresponding leaf area separated by different types of contacts, normal or concordant, discordant and mechanical or intrusive. The tectonic structure is presented by the cartographic traces of the folds, the orientation and dip of the planar and linear elements contained in the rocks, as well as by the structural relationship, through faults and rides, between the cartographically differentiated rock sets. Also, the unique characteristics of igneous rocks are represented, as well as the degree of migmatization of metamorphic rocks. Additional information includes water springs, or surveys, deposits and mineral indications, presence of fossils and other elements of punctual representation. The map is accompanied by lithostratigraphic legend and conventional signs, and geological cuts and tectonic schemes.
The digitization process was carried out by blocks corresponding to areas defined and carried out successively in time by the Junta de Andalucía some, by the Technological Institute and Geominer of Spain others. There are some differences between the blocks, which have been corrected by a normalization work.
